Speech-Less is an installation consisting of interactive and performative ceramic objects. The audience can communicate with themselves or others by inserting their tongue into the mouthshaped ceramic pieces. Their speaking is obscured by the restriction of their tongue, causing any use of language to become a meaningless collection of sounds. Inside of each mouth piece is a lavalier mic that picks up the sound, and then amplifies it outside of the gallery. There is a sink and an assistant who facilitates the sanitation of the mouth pieces before they are reused by another audience member. I, as the performer, would individually talk to one person at a time, while my head is inside a ceramic piece installed on the wall, my tongue being the only part of my face visible to the audience.
